Four hundred new Israeli Army officers paraded yesterday through Jerusalem’s main streets following their completion of an officers training course.
After the parade the officers were entertained by President Ben Zvi at his residence. Premier Moshe Sharett, Defense Minister Pinchas Lavon and Army Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Dayan took the salute. The graduates included 80 students of the Hebrew University and 40 of the Israel Technical Institute at Haifa.
Premier Sharett, addressing the cadets, called on them to hold high the standard of Jewish morale and to combine their military training with “humanitarian science.” He told them that their parade marked an important occasion, because it was the first such parade in Jerusalem and because it was the first such exercise to be held publicly.
Former Premier David Ben Gurion called upon the Israeli youth last night to “dedicate itself unconditionally” to the service of the State. Speaking at a General Zionist youth conference in Haifa, Mr. Ben Gurion declared that Israel is facing many dangers and can only rely for its defense on the Jewish people, one-fourth of whom was exterminated in Europe or “imprisoned in the East.”
