Israel asked the United States to stop the activities of a U.S.-led committee that was created to probe the causes of the violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, according to the Israeli daily Ha’aretz. Outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Barak sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Wednesday, saying the Mitchell Committee should suspend its work because of the ongoing Palestinian violence.
