For the first time in nearly two years Israel today participated in the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission which she had boycotted in protest against certain decisions of the Commission. Today’s participation was motivated by Israel’s desire to dispute Jordan’s contention that the presence of unarmed tanks in Jerusalem Thursday to participate in the Independence Day parade would violate the armistice pact.
The meeting opened yesterday without the presence of Israeli delegates. Today the Israelis called the Jordanian charges of violation of the pact “absurd” since the tanks and other heavy equipment in the parade will be unarmed. A UN Truce Supervision Organization spokesman said the Mixed Commission was trying to “find a way to smooth things over for everyone.”
