Israel Bond Leaders to Meet in Chicago

More than 600 Jewish leaders from the United States and Canada will participate in an International Fall Leadership Planning Conference in Chicago from Aug. 22-24 to initiate a campaign to provide greater economic aid to Israel. The conference, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, has been called to plan intensified community activities to increase the sale of Israel Bonds during the last four months of the year, which traditionally have been the campaign’s most productive period.

A highlight of the Israel Bond conference will be a dinner of welcome for Ambassador Chaim Herzog. Israel’s newly appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations. which will be held the evening of Aug. 23. Herzog will be making his first public appearance in the United States since assuming his new diplomatic post.

Herzog, who has had a distinguished career in public affairs and military service, has also been a leading Israeli attorney. One of Israel’s foremost military analysts and commentators. who retired from the Israel Defense Forces with the rank of Major General he served as Military Governor for the West Bank of the Jordan River following the Six-Day War and held numerous other key military positions. Herzog arrived this week in New York to take up his post at the UN and will present his credentials to Secretary General Kurt Waldheim Aug. 19.

The conference will hear reports on the results of the 1975 Israel Bond drive for the first eight months of the year, and consider ways and means to accelerate the pace of the campaign in the coming months. Various panel and workshop sessions will be held during the three days of the conference, with the aim of strengthening every element of the Israel Bond program and enlisting the participation of new leadership in communities throughout the U.S. and Canada.
