The Israeli authorities today cancelled all meetings of local Israeli and Jordan military commanders in the border regions after an Israeli officer proceeding to a meeting with a Jordan officer in the Latrun area was fired upon by Arab Legion forces.
The incident occurred only 24 hours after the representatives of both states, implementing a decision of the Jordan-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission, signed an agreement providing for daily meetings of local military commanders and police officials of both sides to handle all border incidents and infiltration. The Israeli communique announcing the breaking off of the meetings also detailed other breaches of the armistice agreement by Jordan which combined to force the decision.
