Three hours daily of television broadcasting in Arabic, and one in Hebrew, will be programmed as soon as it is “technically feasible,” the Israel Cabinet decided today.
The new broadcasts are designed to counteract the influence of programs broadcast from the neighboring Arab countries and attentively watched by Arabs in the Israeli-occupied west bank territory.
The facilities of the semi-independent Israel educational television station, funded by the Rothschild Foundation, will be used for the new broadcasts. Minister without Portfolio Israel Galili told the Cabinet today that negotiations were taking place with the foundation regarding details of the planned transmission. It was stressed that the general programs scheduled would not interfere with the educational programs, for which the foundation originally established its subsidy. The question of transmissions on the Sabbath, raised by the Ministry of Religion, will be decided at a later date.
It was also reported at the Cabinet session that the Minister of Trade and Industry, Zev Sharef. will leave for the United States at the end of this week for two weeks of conferences on exports and investments.
