The Israel Cabinet held a meeting last night on the political events of the past few days in Egypt and Syria. Premier and Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett reported to the Ministers.
There was no official comment available on the views of the Cabinet in this matter. A Foreign Office spokesman merely said that the “profound upheavals in Syria cannot but cause the Israel Government grave concern and cause the nation to be on guard.”
A great deal of satisfaction is being derived by all Israelis from the statement by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Moshe Dayan that if necessary, the army can mobilize a force of 250, 000 military personnel. While this figure is believed to include civilian militia and women’s units, it is seen as reassuring evidence that Israel has a large and modern defense force to protect the country.
