The Cabinet today decided to turn over to a threes man committee of legal experts the dispute between Justice Minister Dov Joseph and Attorney General Gideon Hausner over the latter’s authority and functions as the legal adviser to the Government. The issue concerns Mr. Hausner’s present autonomous status under which he has sole authority over the opening or closing of official Governmental legal proceedings.
In presenting arguments before the Cabinet today, Mr. Hausner repeated his threat to resign in the face of attempts to curtail his authority. Mr. Joseph, on the other hand, argued that the Attorney General must be subordinate to the Justice Ministry and raised legal points to support his stand. The committee, the members of which will be named both Mr. Joseph and Mr. Hausner, will file its recommendations with the Government after studying the briefs and hearing both parties.
