A Ministerial subcommittee studying a proposal for an alternate road from Jerusalem’s Mandelbaum Gate to end Sabbath demonstrations by ultra-Orthodox zealots was reported today to have found the idea feasible. Its report will be presented to the next Cabinet meeting Sunday.
Meanwhile the anti-Israel demonstrations in New York and the swastika painting on the New York Israel Consulate building evoked sharp reactions in Israel, including Orthodox sections. A statement by the Klausenberg Rebbe, released earlier in New York, condemned the stone throwing and urged joint efforts by all religious Jewry through the fostering of immigration of Orthodox Jews to help build Israel and strengthen the religious consciousness of Israeli Jews.
Rabbi Josef Sheinberger, one of the Neturei Karta leaders here, said the swastikas were painted “by children without the knowledge of the Satmar Rebbe.” He added, however, that Neturei Karta backed those who demonstrated in New York against the “desecration” of the Sabbath in Jerusalem.
