Damage claims exceeding $4,000,000 are pending against the Egyptian Government as a result of its interference with shipping using the Suez Canal, it was reported today from Cairo. The Egyptians are halting and searching all ships they suspect of carrying cargo to Israel and confiscating this freight, the report said.
Israeli authorities describe the blockade measure as a violation of the Israeli-Egyptian armistice and are planning international action. A British Foreign Office spokesman today said that the Egyptian action was “high-handed.” More than a hundred British ships have been affected by this Egyptian policy since the termination of the British Mandate over Palestine a year ago.
