Israel can become self-supporting within ten years if American Jews continue to back the United Jewish Appeal, Dr. Jorge Granados, former Guatemalan envoy, told the Southern California zone conference of the U.J.A. here last night. More than $200,000 in cash was presented by the 300 delegates.
Dr. Granados declared that “Israel has made unbelievable progress in the close to four years of its existence” despite the extraordinary problems created by its unprecedented immigration. Jack Benny, motion picture and radio star, received an ovation when he appeared at the conference and pledged his support to the U.J.A.
