Israel confirmed that the Palestinian Authority requested permission for the leader of a Palestinian faction opposed to the peace accords to enter the self- rule areas. Previous Israeli governments rejected requests to allow entry to Hawatmeh, citing his alleged involvement in terrorist attacks against the Jewish state.
