The Israel Foreign Ministry was reported today considering diplomatic action through the United Nations for the protection of the Jews of Iraq who are now being subjected to a reign of terror, confiscation of property and other repressive measures.
To a delegation of Iraqi Jews now living in Israel, Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett said that proposals have been offered for international jurisdiction over Iraqi Jews, but so far without result. The delegation urged United Nations intervention and safeguards in behalf of the Jews in Iraq. Mr. Sharett assured the delegation that the Israel Government, within the limitations set by the available transportation facilities, would expedite the evacuation of the Iraq Jews.
Arrivals from Bagdad during the week-end said that anti-Jewish feeling is again being whipped up in the Iraqi capital and that new confiscatory measures are being used against the emigrating Jews. A total of 550 Iraqi Jewish immigrants arrived here in the past 24 hours. They reported that a now customs branch set up at Bagdad airport to examine the Jewelry of departing emigrants is even seizing wedding rings, charging that the gold in them was obtained by melting down Iraqi coins.
