A number of well known American economists are joining an economic advisory staff being established in Israel under contract with the Government of Israel, it was made known here today.
The experts newly retained include Bernard B. Bell, formerly chief economist of the Export-Import Bank; Marion Clawson, formerly chief of the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of the Interior, and A. P. Lerner, formerly Professor of Economics at Roosevelt College, Chicago. Mr. Bell will be the advisory staff’s specialist on internal finance and balance of payment problems, Mr. Clawson will concentrate on agricultural planning, and Mr. Lerner will work in the field of fiscal and monetary policy.
Other engineering and economic specialists are being recruited to deal with industrial planning, transportation planning, the planning of housing and community facilities, and the designing of statistics. The contractual terms provide that the advisory staff is to make confidential recommendations to the Israel Government relative to “such policies and plans, relating to economic affairs, as the economic advisory staff believes may be helpful and appropriate.”
