The decision of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund to grant Israel $300,000 to acquire equipment to pasteurize and refrigerate milk and to acquire equipment to make milk bottles resulted from a request for such assistance by the Israel Government and subsequent studies and negotiations by the government, UNICEF and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, it was learned here today.

The funds would be used to equip dairies operated by the Tnuva Cooperative (non-governmental) in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa with sufficient additional equipment to bottle all milk and to provide bottle-making equipment to existing glass works so that they can manufacture the necessary bottles. Since 60 percent of the child population of Israel is concentrated in these three cities the Tnuva dairies will be able to reach most of the children in Israel with safe milk once the equipment is installed and put into operation.

The practical experience to be derived from this project is expected to serve as a guide for the expansion of safe milk distribution to the entire country. This is the first such project aided by UNICEF in Israel–in fact in the entire Middle East.
