General Yitzhak Rabin, Israel’s Chief of Staff, stressed today that Israel must continue to build its military strength to deter the Arabs from attacking.
Speaking at a regional defense meeting in central Israel, Gen. Rabin cited the recent article in Al Ahram, the Egyptian daily, which said that the Arabs could not attack Israel now because it was too strong.
He said that “it is our duty to ensure that such ideas will prevail among the Arabs,” and added that it was Israeli military strength which prevented the Arabs from carrying out threats to attack Israel over its Negev irrigation project through the National Water Carrier. In an earlier address to a class of graduating cadets, Gen. Rabin reiterated the need for the fostering and molding of Israel’s defense posture.
