Israel Ambassador Avraham Harman today called on G. Lewis Jones, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs to present a formal note conveying the views of the Israel Government on a practice in the chartering of ships by the U.S. Navy that, in effect, abets the Arab blockade.
Mr. Harman said he discussed with Mr. Jones Israel’s concern at a circular issued by the U.S. Navy regarding ship charters with a clause specifying an attitude towards ships unable to fulfill requirements because they had traded with Israel.
Rep. Leonor K. Sullivan, Missouri Democrat, today raised a question on the House floor regarding American policy toward anti-Israel discrimination practiced by the United Arab Republic in the Suez Canal issue.
Rep. Sullivan said President Eisenhower has termed the World Bank, which recently loaned the UAR money to expand Suez Canal facilities, an “instrument of Western policy. ” She said “this very much raises the question of what Free World policy really is on this question of illegal discrimination in the use of the Suez Canal.”
Rep. Glena Cunningham, Nebraska Republican, urged today on the House floor that the State Department make “a strong protest” to the United Arab Republic and also take action through the United Nations to open the Suez Canal to Israel shipping.
Rep. Cunningham said “the continual denial of the use of the canal to Israeli shipping is contrary to historic agreements and contrary to the policy of the United States. The unilateral action taken by the United Arab Republic in this instance is a clear violation of international agreements…”
