Israel’s Foreign Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, conferred for more than an hour yesterday with Andrei A. Gromyko, Soviet Foreign Minister, at Soviet delegation headquarters in New York. Mrs. Meir was accompanied by Joseph Avidar, Israel’s Ambassador to Moscow, who is currently in New York as a member of Israel’s delegation to the UN General Assembly.
Ambassador Avidar’s presence was interpreted by some observers here as an indication that Mrs. Meir intended to discuss with Mr. Gromyko the case of Eliahu Chazan, an Israeli attache at the Moscow Embassy who, Israel charges, was abducted and mistreated by Soviet secret police. There was also some speculation that Mrs. Meir might have raised the question of Soviet arms shipments with the Soviet statesman.
(In Jerusalem, Foreign Ministry sources revealed today that no additional meetings had been arranged between members of the Israeli and Soviet delegations at the United Nations to follow up yesterday’s Meir-Gromyko meeting.)
