Israel Friedmann, the famous Rebbe of Czortkow, Poland, died at a sanatorium here today following an operation which he underwent last week. Rebbe Friedmann was one of the oldest Chassidic Rebbes, or holy men, of his generation. He was a member of the famous Chassidic dynasty founded by “Israel the Ruschiner”, the sainted grandson of Baer of Mesiritch. The latter was the most famous pupil and follower of Israel ben Elieser, the “Ba’al Shem Tov”, the founder of Chassidism.
The Rebbe of Czortkow settled in Vienna during the World War. He was 77 years old. It is expected that thousands will attend his funeral, which will be held Sunday.
