A spokesman for the Embassy of Israel said today that Israel has been given to understand that its concern over arms shipments to Arab states claiming belligerency against Israel was fully understandable and that the U.S. arms policy would be guided strictly by the United States-United Kingdom-French declaration of May 25, 1950 guaranteeing the borders of all Middle East states against aggression.
This was reassuring, the spokesman said, as far as American arms are concerned. With regard to the supply of British jet aircraft to Near Eastern states, Israel has been given to understand that this is a unilateral action, said the Israel spokesman.
The Israel announcement was made today, the Embassy spokesman said, in the light of reports that the State Department views munitions shipments to the Arabs as desirable and implying approval of the British plan. The spokesman said the reports were not in accord with the impression received by the Israelis from their talks with the Department.
