Israel will continue to request of the Western Powers some sort of a defense arrangement in which she might be included along the same lines as the arrangement provided for Turkey, Iran and Pakistan under the Bagdad Pact, it was reported here today following the return of U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles to Washington after having discussed the Middle East situation with members of the Bagdad Pact Council here.
The report said that during yesterday’s session of the Council, some of the delegates present warned that Jordan is now in greater danger than Lebanon. They expressed fear that Jordan might collapse and expressed the opinion that this might impel Israel to intervene and bring about a renewal of the Arab-Israel war. They, therefore, favored the maintaining of British troops in Jordan.
The announcement by Mr. Dulles here yesterday pledging the United States to defend Turkey, Iran and Pakistan was interpreted here today as an attempt to avoid interjecting Israel into the present conflict in the Middle East. The belief was expressed that the announcement did not go far enough toward protecting the non-Arab states of the Middle East from aggression.
