The Ministry of Education warned today that any secondary school which reaches a private agreement with the secondary school teachers union to boost wages, and thus end the increasingly bitter secondary school teachers strike, faced the loss of government aid. The teachers have been on strike since March 5.

The Ministry is caught between the demand of the high school teachers for more pay and the threat by the Histadrut-affiliated Teachers Union, representing primary school teachers, of a strike if the Ministry agreed to the higher pay demands for secondary school teachers.

The Ministry warning was evoked by reports that parents in several schools, despairing of any action from the Ministry to end the impasse, had started negotiations for voluntary increases in tuition fees to make possible salary increases for teachers. The government aids such schools, which are all under private auspices in Israel, through scholarships and aid programs for needy students.
