Israel today informed the envoys of the Western governments here that it will not accept the two principal proposals for “solution” of the Arab refugee problem, made by Arab delegations in the United Nations. These proposals call for appointment of a UN custodian for property allegedly left in Israel by the Arab refugees; and for expansion of the present, three-member Palestine Conciliation Commission.
In separate conferences, Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, explained her government’s views on the refugee problem today to Ogden R. Reid and Patrick Hancock, respectively the Ambassadors of the United States and Britain.
(At the United Nations, the General Assembly’s Special Political Committee, which debated the refugee problem for more than two weeks, has now suspended that debate, to discuss other topics. Meanwhile, a draft resolution on the subject is being circulated by some of the Western delegations, backed by the United States. The Arab delegations are trying to amend that draft, calling for a custodian and for expansion of the PCC.)
