Israel introduced a draft resolution this morning calling on all Middle East countries “to convene at the earliest possible date a conference with a view to negotiating the multi-lateral treaty establishing a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Mideast.”
The measure was presented to the General Assembly’s First Committee by Ambassador Arieh Eilan of Israel’s UN Mission. He noted that the current war between Iraq and Iran “bears witness to major and direct threats to international peace and security with implications for the world as a whole.” Referring to the Arab and other states in the region, Eilan observed, “If they really mean business they should be eager to support the Israeli draft resolution.”
