Rep. Franklin D, Roosevelt, Jr., who recently returned from a visit to Israel, told a Greater New York United Jewish Appeal dinner here last night that to Jewish state, “at a very real risk to its economy, has taken upon itself the tremendous task of making a home for the homeless Jews of the world and is welcoming thousands of immigrants every month–something which much older, larger and more secure states are unwilling or afraid to do.”
Israel’s great concern, Mr. Roosevelt added, is that it “will not be able to provide its immigrants with the barest essentials.” He reported that Israel has adopted a” rigorous rationing program, is taxing its people heavily and has undertaken a strict, austere way of living. “Still the Israelis do not feel they are doing their immigrants Justice when thousands must live in tents or on the bare ground,” he declared.
