Israel claimed Sunday that it had “additional proof” of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s involvement in terrorist activity against Israel.
According to the government, three armed Palestinians captured in the southern Lebanon security zone Saturday by Israel’s allied South Lebanon Army belong to the PLO’s mainstream Fatah faction, which is directly responsible to Yasir Arafat.
Their infiltration into the security zone was described as the first attempt by Fatah to hit Israeli military targets there since December 1988.
Israel is currently trying to persuade the United States to break off its 17-month dialogue with the PLO, which was predicated on Arafat’s public renunciation of terrorism in December 1988.
Yossi Olmert, director of the Government Press Office, said in an interview on Israel Radio’s Arabic-language program that “the attempted infiltration of three Fatah organization members from Lebanese territory into Israel, thwarted last night by the SLA, is additional proof of the continuing involvement of the PLO in terrorist attacks against Israel.”
