Israel is planning to seek a spot on the United Nations Security Council. The move, announced by Israeli Foreign Minster Silvan Shalom in a speech this week to the U.N. General Assembly, comes in response to the relatively warm reception Israel has received since its recent withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, a spokesman for Israel’s U.N. mission told JTA.
