“The wave of Jewish immigration would have inundated the young state of Israel had it not been for the highly organized labor movement” which gave the government moral, social and economic support during the first 18 months of the state’s existence, Meir Grabowsky, deputy in the Israel Knesset, who is in this country to aid the Histadrut $10,000,000 drive, declared late yesterday.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Grabowsky said that 90 percent of the immigrants arrive in Israel without means and require vocational training and employment. He revealed that during the past year the Histadrut has established over 1,900 new cooperatives for immigrants, some 50,000 of whom have joined the labor federation. The Histadrut has also set up a 1,000,000-pound ($2,800,000) industrial development fund to aid the immigrants.
