A ministerial committee decided yesterday to recommend the construction of Israel’s first nuclear power station, a 900-megawatt plant that will cost an estimated $700 million at current prices. The decision came after prolonged deliberations and is subject to final approval by the National Planning and Construction Council and the Finance Ministry. If approved, the plant would be built during the 1980s.
The committee also recommended an option to purchase a second nuclear reactor of the same capacity. There are, reportedly, three potential suppliers–the Westinghouse Co., Babcox and Wilcox and General Electric, all American firms.
