Some 40,000 shops and privately owned businesses throughout the country closed down this morning in a four-hour “strike” against taxes.
Called by several merchants associations, the strike took place on the 30th day after the suicide of Israel Sinai, a Jerusalem cake baker, who left a suicide note blaming high taxes for his action.
The merchants groups stated that the aim of the strike was to arouse public opinion in favor of a tax reduction for small, independent businessmen who, they said, are unable to bear the current tax burden.
