Zalman Aranne, Israel’s Education Minister, criticized the American Jewish community last night for “coming hat in hand to Israel to beg for teachers” for Jewish schools in the United States.
Appearing as an unscheduled speaker at the 40th anniversary convention of the American National Council for Jewish Education, the Education Minister described American Jewry as not only rich materially but also possessor of hundreds of thousands of college-trained Jews. He told the American Jewish educators that the American Jewish community must itself do something for its cultural needs.
He suggested that American Jewry choose its best intellectuals, pay them “proper” salaries, and give them conditions and status which would raise the teaching profession to a level with other professions. “My anger soars when I hear that the great and rich American Jewry is asking Israel to send teachers to the United States,” he stated.
