Commerce Minister Haim Zadok reported to Israel’s Parliament last night on the failure of his efforts and those of Agriculture Minister Haim Gvati to induce the European Common Market to rescind a regulation which would raise the consumer price for Israeli oranges in the six Euromart countries by 20 percent.
The “minimum reference price” rule went into effect yesterday at the behest of Italy, a Euromart member which also sells oranges in the Euromart countries. The two Cabinet Ministers together visited all of the Euromart countries last week in their futile effort to win a cancellation of the “reference price” decision.
Mr. Zadok warned, in his Knesset report, that international trade was a two-way proposition, a fact of which the European countries should take note. Israel currently is importing three times as much from Europe as it is exporting.
