A half million tons of modern, diversified shipping to be completed by 1960 is the goal set by the Zim Israel Navigation Company of Haifa, Dr. N. Wydra, managing director of Israel’s largest shipping company, told a press conference here.Dr. Wydra said Israel was seeking only a fair share of the rapidly growing world shipping market “and the growth of our fleet will curtail no one else’s share.” He noted that his company’s building plans for the next four years will more than quadruple the present fleet aggregating some 120,000 deadweight tons. He predicted a total Israeli merchant marine of some 2,000,000 tons in 20 years.Dr. Wydra spoke on the occasion of the appointment of Garcia & Diaz, Inc. of New York City as general agents in the United States for the Zim Israel Navigation Company. The appointment was announced by Gottlieb Hammer, president of the American-Israeli Shipping Company, U. S. representatives and passenger agents for Zim Lines.
