Israel is at present negotiating with both Great Britain and the United States regarding the steps to be taken after British evacuation of the Suez Canal area.
“We have warned both the British and the American Governments,” Mr. Saphir said, “of the possible consequences and implications–for them, as well as for us–that might result from Great Britain’s evacuation of the Suez Canal area. We are urging both governments to take effective steps against increased tension in the Middle East.”
Mr. Saphir, who arrived here from Tel Aviv last night to help launch the United Israel Appeal in the Union of South Africa, also declared that Israel will not be intimidated by hostile statements and threats from Arab statesmen. Reaffirming Israel’s desire for peace, he declared: “If any country attacks us, we are fully prepared to meet the situation.”
