Israel no longer views Abul Abbas, the Palestinian who masterminded the 1995 hijacking of the Achilles Lauro cruise ship, as a threat to state security. Israeli Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein responded to a petition by two Israelis and Dov Hikind, a New York state assemblyman from Brooklyn, asking that Abbas be handed over to Israel to stand trial. Abbas currently resides in the Palestinian self-rule areas.
