The 30th anniversary of the annihilation of the Jewish community in Hebron, one of the most ancient cities in the Holy Land, which was destroyed during an Arab pogrom in 1929, was solemnly observed at ritual ceremonies atop Mt Zion yesterday.
Hundreds of residents of Hebron, including survivors of the 1929 massacre, attended special services at which biblical passages referring to ancient Hebron were recited by rabbis and other religions elders. The services were concluded with many participants ascending to the roof of the synagogue on Mt. Zion, and facing the inaccessible Cave of Machpelah where, according to the Bible, the Hebrew Patriarchs–Abraham, Isaac and Jacob–were buried.
