The city was in virtual darkness this evening as lights were dimmed in the streets, public places, cafes and movie theaters in observance of Holocaust and Heroes Memorial Day. Flags in all army units and installations were lowered to half-mast and special memorial meetings and services were conducted throughout the country. The observance began with a two-minute siren alert for all citizens to observe two minutes of silence in honor of the six million Jews who perished in the holocaust.
