Israeli officials today said they were shocked to learn of the appointment by the Bonn Government as West German ambassador to Sweden, of Karl Werkmeister, former Nazi diplomat in Budapest during the period of Adolf Eich-mann’s activities in connection with the annihilation of hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews.
The Israeli officials, who earlier believed that the new envoy was not the same former Nazi diplomat, said today that they were now convinced that Karl Werkmeister was the wartime aide to Vessenmayer, the Nazi representative in Budapest at the time Eich-mann served there.
