The Israel Government is planning to import enough food from abroad to guarantee every resident an average of 2,400 calories of food daily, it was revealed here today with the release of government estimates on imports for next year.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry is planning to distribute four meat rations a month and about three pounds of fish each month, one third of which will be produced or caught locally and the remainder purchased abroad.
The Ministry’s schedules, which are planned for a population of 1,700,000, include the importation of only two vegetables–onions and potatoes. Some $7,500,000 will be spent on milk powder and $5,000,000 on sugar–both to be purchased abroad. Special rations will be granted infants, expectant mothers and manual laborers.
