A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said today that the Ministry was considering steps to tighten the Law of Return in view of the large number of Jews fleeing to Israel to escape arrest or trial abroad.
The spokesman made that comment in connection with an announcement that the Ministry had not issued any kind of permit to Peter Liberman, a stowaway from Detroit, who is wanted by the United States on charges of passport fraud. The spokesman added that the Ministry had no intention of issuing such a permit to Liberman, and that the Detroit man had no legal status and was merely in Israel on sufferance.
