President Itzhak Ben Zvi of Israel today issued a special Rosh Hashanah message greeting the people of Israel and the Jews of the entire world on the occasion of the new year, the seventh since the establishment of the Jewish State.
He singled out the armed forces and border patrols for special note, pointing out that on their watchfulness depended the security of the state and its inhabitants. He underlined that Israel was still not out of the wilderness as far as her relations with her neighbors was concerned and that “the armistice agreements which were signed five years ago have not brought in their wake the much desired peace for which they were intended.”
Stressing that the present generation of Jews had been honored “with the privilege of witnessing the beginning of the realization of the vision of our prophets–the vision of redemption”–he called for increased efforts to build the country’s industry and agriculture and to defeat all open and secret conspiracies against the land. He also called for support of the government’s campaign to unify the Israeli people and to extend brotherhood and equality to all citizens “without distinction of group or class.”
