The founding meeting of the Israel Press Council, established by the Editors Committee, the Israel Journalists Association and the Newspaper Publishers Council, today elected Zeev Sharef as its first president. Mr. Charef, who held the post of secretary of the Cabinet for 10 years since the State was established, also served as Civil Service Commissioner and Director of State Revenues.
The purpose of the new organization is to maintain the level of Israeli journalism, ensure adherence by newsmen to a professional code, and safeguard the freedom of the press.
In a message to the meeting of the Council, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion lauded the voluntary move by the Israeli press in establishing the organization and said that the standard of Israeli journalism did not fall short of that in the most enlightened countries. He said that if he had to choose between abuse of free expression and a suppressed press, he would choose the former.
