Israel is ready to enter into direct high level negotiations with Jordan to solve problems contributing to border tension between the two states even if the talks are held in Jerusalem, a Foreign Office spokesman stated here today.
He was commenting on the rejection by Jordan representative Dr. Yusuf Haikal of a proposal for such talks at United Nations headquarters, put forth by Israel Ambassador Abba Eban. Dr. Haikal, addressing the Security Council Monday, suggested that if Israel had such a proposal to make to Jordan it do so through the UN truce supervisor in Palestine and if the proposal were acceptable to Jordan the meeting could take place in Jerusalem.
The Israeli spokesman pointed out that Israel has never refused any offer of direct negotiations regardless of the venue of the talks. However, he specified that the talks must not only be between high level representatives but must deal with “high level matters” peace.
