Foreign Ministry sources said today that contacts were proceeding with the government of South Vietnam with the view to establishing diplomatic relations between Jerusalem and Saigon. The sources said that reports that diplomatic ties would be formalized within two weeks were “pure speculation.” They said that no developments have occurred since Foreign Minister Abba Eban announced last week in the Knesset that Israel decided in principle to respond favorably to overtures from Saigon.
Sources here said Israel would soon open a Consulate General in Hong Kong in response to the increasing volume of trade with the British Crown Colony. The sources said the decision to open the Consulate was made several months ago but no appointment has been made so far to the post.
