Israel raised a number of possible alternatives for a safe-passage route between the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including an overpass or tunnel, a visiting German politician said. But Gerhard Schroder, a Social democrat who plans to run against Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Germany’s upcoming elections, described the ideas presented to him by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “strange.” The safe passage route is one of the unresolved issues from the 1995 Interim Agreement signed by Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
