Israel has received three billion dollars from foreign sources since the State was established in 1948, and about $700,000,000 of that total has come from United States Government assistance, Henry Chalfant, deputy director of the American “Point Four” program in Israel, declared here today.
Mr. Chalfant made that statement at a symposium on American-Israeli friendship held here today at ZQA House. United States Ambassador Ogden Reid and other American officials, as well as prominent Israelis, attended the meeting.
Mr. Chalfant lauded Israel as an “apt learner,” praising the State for having progressed so far that, now, it is able to provide technical assistance to other countries, particularly in Africa and Asia. “Israel,” he said, “has started to carry her share of the burden, with other countries of the free world, in helping development in the new countries.”
Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, who is now attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, sent a message to the symposium, expressing her “pleasure with the fact that Israelis can now learn more from America.” Ambassador Reid reviewed the “many forms of cooperation binding together the United States and Israel.”
