Israel formally recognized the new revolutionary regime in Zanzibar in a message sent by Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, to Zanzibar President Abeid Karume.
The message conveyed the Israel Government’s “warmest felicitations” on the proclamation of the Zanzibar Republic and expressed the hope that the ties between the two countries would “increase in strength.” The previous Zanzibar government was dominated by an Arab majority and showed no interest in ties with Israel. Israel was not invited to the Independence Proclamation celebrations though Mrs. Meir was in Nairobi at the time.
