Israel returned to Egypt today the bodies of nine Egyptian commandos killed in an abortive raid on Israeli positions on the east bank of the Suez Canal Monday. The transfer of the bodies took place at Kantara under supervision of the International Red Cross.
An Israeli spokesman denied a Cairo claim that Egypt had mounted a new commando attack today across the Suez Canal. Cairo asserted that two “reenforced platoons” crossed the waterway and blew up five Israeli gun positions. The Israeli spokesman said “there is no evidence of any crossing and no damage to any of our positions.” Cairo also claimed that Egyptian gunners shot down an Israeli helicopter today during a four hour artillery duel.
An Arab saboteur was killed in an explosion near the Banias River in the upper Golan Heights today, an Israeli military spokesman said. The blast damaged a tractor. A second explosion occurred nearby at the same time and an investigation disclosed damage to a meteorological observation post. The saboteur is believed to have been killed when he mishandled the explosives.
Damascus radio said today that Syrian and Israeli troops clashed in the Golan Heights. It claimed that Syrian gunners destroyed an Israeli bulldozer and two heavy machine guns.
