Mayer Israel Rokach was today re-elected to hoad the city administration. He received 19 votes, an absolute majority of the ballots cast in the new municipal council.
Mayor Rokach’s re-election was made possible by the conclusion of a coalition agreement among the contrist General Zionists, who are headed in this city by Mr. Rokach, the rightwing Horut party and the representatives of various religious groups and the single counciller of the Landlord’s Party. Yesterday, when Mayor Rokach failed to receive more than 15 of the 16 votes nooded for election, the Herut had abstained.
The Herut and the Orthodox Bloc were each assigned one Deputy Mayor. The Herut representative is M. Cohen, while the Orthodox deputy in A. Pikas.
Meanwhile, the Jerusalem and Petach Tikvah municipal elections have been postponed by the inability of the religious groups to agree among themselves and by their failure to arrive at an agrement with the rightwing parties. In Jorusalem, the Mizrachi faction refuses to deal with the Mapai because the Labor Party has a pact with the leftwing Socialist Mapam.
