Abba S. Eban, Israel Ambassador to the United States and head of the Israel delegation to the United Nations, will take up with Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold the continued detention by Egypt of Raphael Eylon, Israeli sailor taken off the Danish ship Brigitte Toft July 22, Israeli sources disclosed today.
These sources said Israel still has received no information about the condition of Mr. Eylon, who was arrested just before the Israeli-chartered Danish ship entered the Suez Canal. The ship continued on to Haifa.
The International Red Cross still has not received permission to visit Mr. Eylon in prison to determine whether he is receiving the treatment required by international law, the sources said. They revealed that Israel today made new urgent representations to Red Cross headquarters in Geneva.
(The New York Times, in a dispatch from Cairo yesterday, cited official Egyptian sources as saying that Mr. Eylon would be released “very soon.” The dispatch cited the Egyptian sources as indicating Eylon would probably be handed over to Israeli authorities across the demarcation line at the Gaza Strip.)
